Dine with Pesetas...
This new proposal forms part of the calendar of historical events "Centenary Route" preceeded by the Titanic Dinner or Dine like a King
It is the 200th anniversary of the minting of the first peseta in 1809, during the years of the Napoleonic reign, therefore within the chapter of historical events and happenings organised by The Westin Palace, Madrid (Hotel Palace), "Centenary Route", from next 24th of September we are holding a series of historical dinners as a tribute to the Pesetas and to Queen Isabel II, who subsequently made this coin popular, before it was implanted as the national monetary unit, using it to pay the mercenaries who defended her rights of succession against Carlos V, which was the reason behind their name of "peseteros".
With this menu we are celebrating a joint tribute to our Peseta and to Isabel II, grandmother of King Alfonso XIII, the promoter of the building of the Palace. The selection of the dishes is based on a banquet to Their Royal Highnesses on the 18th of December of 1866, almost 150 years ago, taken from the book by the writer and journalist Eva Celada "La Cocina de la Casa Real" (Royal Cuisine), which includes between its covers the secrets and most surprising recipes from the Spanish Royal Family's banquets.
Isabel II (the Queen of the sad destinies) was renowned for her great love of gastronomy as was shown by her little trips with the ladies of the court to taste the specialities from some of the restaurants of Madrid that are now celebrating their centenaries such as Lhardy.
The menu may be enjoyed every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from the 24th of September in our restaurant, La Rotonda, offering dinners from 8 pm to 11 pm.
The price: 8,136 pesetas or 50 euros including VAT.

Each coin brings with it a little, particular piece of history. Coins have been exceptional witnesses of a country's history, forming a valuable and well-loved treasure, with a much higher value than that stamped on them. The journey of a coin is linked to the history of our country and to the events that occurred from the moment it came into circulation. In the case of the Palace, we remember that our first guest paid 7 pesetas for his night's accommodation or that the 1919 New Year's Eve banquet cost 19 pesetas, even a stay by Picasso who paid 25 pesetas as is shown by the register open on the page for the 17th of June 1917 which is on display in the "Palace Space", the small museum, a corner for the Palace's memory that opened its doors last September and that is celebrating its first birthday this month.
The arrival of the euro brought to an end 134 years of history (the peseta was implanted as the national monetary unit on the 19/10/1868) during which the peseta held a starring role.
We would like to thank Eva Celada, journalist and specialised author in gastronomy, manager
